St. Vincent de Paul Conferences Delaware County
A Network of Support
More than 200 members at 17 parish based St. Vincent de Paul of Delaware County conferences provide a network of support for people suffering from the effects of poverty, serving in a spirit of charity, humility, and friendship.
This approach to volunteer service is the same now as when the international society of St. Vincent de Paul began in 1833, when founder Frederick Ozanam was a pioneer in leading others in service to the materially poor in Paris France, visiting families in their homes and offering food, coal for heat, and other support. What distinguished that service was the highest level of respect and dignity extended to those being served.
Today our SVDP conference members continue that tradition locally by providing food, utility and rent assistance, and other items of necessity to help neighbors in need in their local communities throughout difficult times. Most importantly, our members offer hope to those in need and the love of our Lord Jesus Christ. The conference also offers referral to human service agencies including strategies and support to overcome poverty.
Through the tireless efforts of our volunteer members, each year our conferences typically provide over $280,000 in financial assistance, $115,000 in food assistance, and other support to more than 17,000 individuals in need regardless of race, religion, or ethnicity.
What is a Conference?
Conferences are parish-based groups of 5-50 laymen and women who seek to grow spiritually by becoming personally involved in helping those in need in their communities. Conference members, called Vincentians, provide direct services and referrals to needy individuals and families.
In the parish, Conferences work closely with their pastor and congregation to serve people in need. Each conference decides what programs and services it will offer based on the needs in the local area.
